Wu Xing — The Five Elements

The five phases of energy that describe the cycles of nature, the human body, relationships, and the entire cosmos.

Wood
Fire
Earth
Metal
Water

The Cycles of Creation & Control

Creation Cycle (Sheng): Wood fuels Fire → Fire creates Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal collects Water → Water nourishes Wood. This is the nurturing, generative cycle of the Five Elements.

Control Cycle (Ke): Wood parts Earth → Earth absorbs Water → Water extinguishes Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood. This is the balancing, regulating cycle.

These cycles form the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), martial arts, Feng Shui, Chinese astrology (Ba Zi), and even Chinese cuisine. Understanding them reveals how everything in the universe is interconnected.
